Open Source Hardware is really a cool thing. We spend money on Hardware we buy and this is our property so its our choice to install different firmware accourding to our need.
Like in computer systems we have choice to install XP,Vista or Linux may be Ubuntu.
Hope this will be adopted by manufacturers as many Open Source codes are now a days used in little handy devices to larger servers.
Few weeks back I was so happy after changing firmware of my Wireless Router Linksys WRT54GL I was able to increase its TX upto 100dBm and that was to give me quiet stronger connectivity
